Significance of Drinking Games in Korean Drinking Culture

Drinking games have always had a special place in Korean drinking culture. Sure, we all love our Soju shots, but it’s the games that take the experience to a whole new level! These games aren’t just about getting a buzz; they’re about building connections, strengthening friendships, and getting to know each other in the most hilarious and unexpected ways.

Titanic (탕이탄닉)

This game is called Titanic, because you don’t want to let the “boat” sink.

Get a beer glass and fill it halfway with beer. Place a soju shot glass inside the glass with beer and let it float. Take turns to pour soju in small amounts into the shot glass. The one who lets the shot glass sink (like the titanic) has to drink the whole drink at once.

Upgrade: If you want to spice up the game, you can play titanic the reversed way. Pour soju into the beer glass and take turns to pour beer in small amounts into the shot glass. The same game-rules will apply for this version. The only different would be the amount of soju and the amount of beer.

Flick the Cap

Twist the long strip that extends from the soju bottle cap until it is close to coming off. Take turns to flick the strip until it comes off. The person who flicks the strip off, wins the game. The person on the left and right side of the winner, has to cheers a shot and drink it as punishment of losing the game.

Higher and lower

There is always a number hidden at the inside of every soju bottle cap. This number is always between 0 and 99. One person looks at what the number is, and the others take turns to guess the number. The person who knows the number only says higher or lower. The one who guesses the number, has to drink a shot.

Cham, cham, cham! (참 참 참)

The “Cham Cham Cham” game is a popular hand game in South Korea, often played by children or used as a fun icebreaker among adults. The game’s name comes from the Korean words “참 참 참,” which are similar to saying “rock, paper, scissors” in English. Here’s how it works:

-Determine the “Attacker” and “Defender” by playing a round of rock-paper-scissors, with the winner becoming the Attacker.
-Both players chant ‘Cham, Cham Cham’ and the Attacker points their hand in a direction (up, down, left, or right).
-The goal for the Defender is to point their head in a direction different from where the Attacker pointed.
-If the Attacker and Defender point in different directions, the Defender wins, and their roles switch for the next round.
-If the Attacker and Defender point in the same direction, the Attacker wins and can *’hit’ the Defender on the head. The Attacker continues attacking until they lose.

*Instead of ‘hitting’ each other, a simple forfeit can be applied or the loser can take a shot of soju.
