Bingsu

Bingsu or 빙수 is the ultimate refreshing treat that will satisfy your cravings for something sweet and cooling. It is a well-loved Korean dessert composed of shaved ice that melts in your mouth, garnished with an array of toppings like fresh fruit, sweet syrups, chocolate or even cookies! This is the epitome of Korean culinary innovation as it has captured worldwide affection as an adored dessert.

Origin of Bingsu

This may be hard to believe, but did you know that bingsu was once only enjoyed by the wealthy? Crazy, right? But back then, not everyone had access to refrigerators. Fast forward to today, and now we can all indulge in this refreshing and delicious dessert! The history of frozen treats dates back to ancient times, and even China observed shaved ice as early as 3000 BC. But the kudos for bingsu goes to Korea’s Joseon era, where the powerful and privileged indulged in it with red beans to add a little sweetness. And during the war, influences led to the addition of syrups, cereals and even rice cakes.

How is Bingsu made?

Making bingsu can be a meticulous process but in return, you get this addicting texture and delicious flavor! First, finely shaved ice serves as the foundation of your bingsu. This is what gives it that snowflake-y texture that melts in your mouth. From here on out you’re free to top your bingsu with whatever you want! You can add toppings such as fresh fruit (like mangoes or strawberry), jelly, chocolate or even red beans and rice cakes! To add a little bit of sweetness and more flavour, feel free to drizzle some sweet syrups or condensed milk. Adding a scoop of ice cream is pretty common, giving it that extra creaminess and flavor. Yum!

Come to SOJU Bar today and enjoy the chilly, sweet taste of bingsu with your friends and family!
